Patient investors were rewarded last week, as the market surged into October and pushed the major indices above their recent trading range tops. The Dow Jones industrial average (DJIA) was propelled to a new all-time high, providing a lift to equities.

It turns out that the watched pot was indeed less likely to boil, as the Dow seemed to hold off on breaking into record territory until the market buzz surrounding the expected event died down a bit. But the record eventually gave way thanks to a continuous stream of mixed economic data that all fell within the criteria of the "Goldilocks" economy that has been deemed necessary to continue the market's uptrend.
