I was gonna buy sirius before Howard Stern and I'm glad I never did. But I hear that sirius is gonna buy xm. Is it a good idea to buy sirius stock?

you could have made a lot of money if you sold the stock at the right time when howard stern got on board.

SIRI is a dog - stay away from it. Even if it merges with XM, I don't see a whole lot of upside..

I don't see a lot of upside either when they're paying the talent so much money. 500 million to Stern, tons to Oprah and Martha, tons for the rights to baseball and NFL.
The good news is that many cars come with satellite radio as an option, but they also come with an iPod connection.
The daughter and I were just looking at a new Scion Tc, and for some reason the computer didn't want to let us have the satellite radio with a rear wing spoiler, probably because of the antenna. So the daughter said she'll just use her iPod instead. Satellite radio is nice, but many are using that iPod connection and doing it that way.

remember, satellite radio may be big in the future. Buying sirius at $3 a share is not expensive and the stock could go up a lot over the long haul. I don't expect siri to do well in the upcoming months unless they merge with XM. If siri gets in the $1-2 range, than you could probably pick it up for an extremely cheap price. I'm not 100% sure, but I think satellite radio could be big in the future (10-20 years in the future). I'm not sure though so don't listen to me. good luck

wow niketennis, have you learned anything ever since you joined this forum?? i even remember a forum member telling you that just because siri is price at $2 o 3 doesn't mean that it is necessarily cheap. i suggest you go read a book before misguiding others with your 'advice'.

and obviously i'm sure everything's gonna be BIG in the future, heck im sure aapl will be 2x what its worth now or more in 20 years. you can't really view/pick stocks from that viewpoint.

well, i can't really pick on a high schooler doing a stock sim, but yeah...just rambling

albert, i'm not as smart as you when it comes to stocks. I'm currently reading Jim Cramer's Sane investing in an insane world (great book). Siri has potential. Once it merges with XM, expect the company to boom. If both companies merged, advertising wouldn't be needed as much and they would dominate the market. Again, i don't know as much as others on this forum think and i'm just stating my opionions.

i personally think that the easy money was made in the satellite stocks a few years ago.

xm was around what, 35, 40 bucks two years ago. It is 12 now and for good reason. sirius was around 8 a few years ago and is now at 3.

these companies just dont make money. Their costs are too high and people love their ipods too much.

Now that these companies are trying to merge, they are priced into the stocks and probably keeping both of these higher than they should be.

I wouldnt touch either one.

I think blackhawk is right that the big $$$ has already been made on these. However, since both are struggling, Cramer has a good point that the merger will likely go through. If it didn't, you would likely have one company go under and then you would have one satellite radio company anyhow, so they may as well allow the merger.

I listened to CSPAN's coverage of some of the early testimony on this, and there are a lot of people who operate under the basic assumption that having only 1 satellite radio company = monopoly. I think that assumption is flawed. I believe that there are many listning options for the consumer: free radio, tapes, CDs, MP3s, iPods, handheld satellite radio receives, phones, handheld video games, etc.

When I commute to DC every day, I see tons of white ear buds, and lots of people with video games on the Metro trains. By the way, what I see more than anything is books and newspapers. In short, I don't think it matters that there are 1 or 10 satellite radio companies - there are so many other things competing for the listening time of the consumer that SIRI and XMSR merging will not impact that competitive environment -- in fact, any satellite music for a fee will be hindered when compared to free radio, or cheap downloads for MP3s. It would be interesting to see Karmazin argue that the merger needs to go through so that he can be competive with the other forms of entertainment out there.

My guess is that the merger will get approved, and Cramer says when it's approved SIRI will likely goto $5. That wold be great, since I have been carrying a big loss on SIRI for a long time (still a 23% unrealized loss at friday's close).

I never liked the stock. I think that most of the people that invested in SIRI wished they hadn't.
