Hello Everyone. Glad I found this site. I've recently become a big fan of Mad Money and plan to take that 20% of my investment portfolio and try to make some mad money!!

So I was wondering if someone could recommend an online account (and I'll use a referal code if it gets you a bonus).

Probably will start the account with <$3k and probably won't make more than 2-3 trades/month. TD Ameritrade looks like $9.99/trade but they don't link to any IPO's. E-trade looks like $12.99/trade for my level, and it appears I might be able to get in on some IPO's if they are linked to the underwriters.

Any help is appreciated.

Scottrade is $7 a trade, but they charge extra for mutual funds
The one I use, firstrade, is $6.95 a trade with free mutual funds. Check them out...www.firstrade.com

I like Tradeking. They recently added some new technology which allows for greater technical analysis which is really nice. Also the trades are only $4.95 which is very cheap. Ranked #1 of online traders by SmartMoney. Not bad. Hope this helps.

I use Scottrade and am satisfied. $7 trades.

One consideration for me was Scottrade has a local office I can visit or call if I have a problem.

I have both an Ameritrade and Scottrade account. Both are pretty good. I opened the Scottrade account because the trades are cheaper. FWIW, I haven't had problems with either of them, but I don't trade a lot.

I have no problems with Scottrade, but do remember it is $7 in and $7 out, ergo, $14

Scottrade is updating its site around Feb 14th for what it is worth

My local office have real humans working and they are friendly and helpful

I use Scottade and has served me well.

I do not have a large account, it is a cash account, and I make a couple buys/sells/trades a month. So far a have yet to make any move in 2007.

So i like the no fee or minimums. I also like that there is twoo offices about 15 minutes from my house if needed.

what research do you guys get? I use ETrade (highly reccomended) and get S&P and Credit Suisse. They have a nice platform, and are reasonable. I actually think that if you have high commissions you will think about your trades more. Thats why I dont want to sign up for zecco.com

I actually have had scottrade for a few months now and it isnt bad for what you pay for. but i just recently acquired the masters program for investools which is a very powerful research and analytical site that even searches for performing stocks, so i am closing out of scottrade and getting into zecco. i like the zero commisions and the 3.50+.60 option contracts. i just dont enjoy that it doesnt offer a realtime trading platform, but i will probably just piggyback off of scottrade until they kick me out. thinkorswim is the brokerage that investools recently aqcuired and they offer students an $8 trade discount (not much i know from $9) but their trading platform is great. you dont have to sign up for options or any other restrictions because they automatically give them to you without application. I will most likely switch to them once i make enough money trading and commissions stop eating me alive.

i am trying to figure out if zecco offers stop orders though, and its my major concern. they also have roth ira's that have a sole fee of $30 a year and no minimum start up amount.

actually, i've just decided to go with thinkorswim, the options contracts are only 1.50 for students and they have no restrictions with a great platform.

I like Scottrade for my swing trades and anything less than 12 months. I hear it's not the best for the die hard day traders, but for me it works out great. Cheap commisions and I've always had my order filled prompt and accurate. They simplify tax time pretty well too. I'm looking forward to their new site changes this Feb.
I also have a Sharebuilder account that I use for my long term investments. I like the return on the Money Market account, and I also use it for anything that pays me dividends. Or what I consider to be my retirement 'solid' stocks. Mainly my oil cash cows.

Scottrade on its web page says it will be changing things Feb 14th, so if you are looking for a broker, you might wait and see what the new whatever looks like

Anybody out there trade through Vanguard or Fidelity? I've got some money in with Fidelity and use their Active Trader Pro feature that is a stand-alone program that allows you to stream live. Has some good filters and chart tools. But I trade through buyandhold.com.

I am using them and are very satisfied. They have a promo where they charge you $1 per trade for your 1st three months. Then after that it went to $3 all the time (bronze status). I am a strictly long investor, though. Their free research is limited. Also, you can't do fancy trades like margin trading, no iras, no options or shorting. Still they have a straightforward web interface. The next best thing I could find was tradeking @ 4.95 (haven't tried them yet).

Merrill gives me 500 free trades a year but has some limits on shares for sub $5 stocks (might be sub $3 I forget) and high asset requirements to qualify, their research is very powerful. Thompson has great charting and it is real time so the 1 min updates on the fly which is nice. Screen parameters are everything I have ever heard of and then some, both technical and fundamental. E*Trade is also pretty good if you get the plus service, but I haven't been needing it unless I am away from home trading on my laptop.
