I need a new laptop and though i'd buy an apple but compusa said you can not attach a broadband wireless card to it the way i can my pc. Apples wireless only works if your near an apple base, can this be right?

I have a mac book pro and hook up to any wireless network no problem. I am using it now in a house with a non mac wi-fi router.

I've got an older mac laptop too but I can't take it on the road with me on a motorcycle trip and use it like i can with my Dell that has a sprint broadband wireless card. With the Dell and the wireless card i can use it in the middle of nowhere. Compusa is saying you can't do that with the Apple, you have to be near a router as you are. Seems like Apples really missing the boat on that one.

You can't attach a wireless card to it because I don't think Apple sells any laptops without the wireless card built in. It works with any router. I have mine set up with Lynksys. The salesmen often don't know what they're talking about. Phone the Apple online store, and when you have your answers go to your retailer and don't talk to anyone there except to buy your product. Most of those people don't want to have anything to do with Apple computers.

Just to be clear I can use my sprint broad band card on my pc laptop and get an internet connection anywhere I can get a phone signal as well as near a router. I can be 30 east of Jesus and still get Internet.
I'm really kinda shocked Apple has this glaring omission. Maybe this is will be sorted out with their alliance with Cingular. Apple just needs to pull that Airport wireless card out and stick a Cingular card in, problem solved.

I did misunderstand, sorry, I don't believe they offer the type of service you're talking about. I have a Treo that I can use as a modem, but I haven't actually tried it.

I have connected my Motorola phone to my Apple laptop to connect to the Internet, although it isn't supported by my wireless carrier it worked flawlessly. Only problem was I racked up a gigantic bill because they charge by the Kbyte and it cost me about $200 for about 2 hours of connection time. But it should work with Cingular, I didn't use anything except a cable to connect the computer to the phone. It also works with Bluetooth wirelessly, according to what I found online, but I never got that far into it.

I've worked my apple laptop via bluetooth with my cell phone before as well but it's not near the speed as using my sprint broadband wireless card with my pc laptop. The sprint card is about as fast as my line-of-sight wireless connection I get on my farm. I'm not sure exactly what I’m paying for the Sprint service but I think it's about 80 bucks a month unlimited use. The kewl thing about it: you can be in Colorado in the summer 30 miles off road on the continental divide and trade stocks :-]
