View Full Version : VIAC? Was I stupid not to sell?
Was I stupid not to sell VIAC today? I had a hunch a few days ag, after seeing all the movement in stem cell stocks that this one could run up a bit.
I am up 11% in 4 days. Was I stupid not to sell?
I am thinking of using a "sell the news" tactic and sell on election day.
What do you folks think?
What is the best exit strategy, in your opinion?

I suspect your main concern is a gap down while holding during market close. If that were to happen Monday morning, perhaps wait for a bounce if the trade turns negative before you can execute a trade. If no gap down occurs I'd set a trailing stop to lock in profits at a level that works for your situation, assuming there is enough liquidity and not too much volatility to rely on a trailing stop to execute at or close to the trigger price.
It's tough to plan an exit strategy without knowing how many shares you hold and your financial needs and goals, which is certainly too private to reveal. What I or anyone else would settle for might be a pittance for you, however anytime I'm up $500 or more I like to lock that in and take a sure thing rather than try and hit a home run everytime, but that may vary depending on my last trade since the psychology of a winner or loser will affect your risk tolerance on the next trade to some degree. (jmo of course)
No matter the outcome I would not say you were stupid for not taking profits today, if it doesn't work out it becomes a learning experience, which I think is one of the most valuable tools in trading.
Sorry for the long winded reply:wink:
thanks for the advice.
I'm just a bit nervous now, bacause, I've recently hit a streak of tough trades.

Your welcome for my opinion, please don't call it advice, I haven't been in this game near long enough to give actual advice.
Nervous is good; keeps you from making cocky trades or getting sucked into hyped stocks (just an opinion of course:wink: )

not bad, over 5% gain today.. You think VIAC will still be able to grow some more
tough to say, I am almost too scared to try and milk another day out of it, since I'm up 18%, in a week and a half.
One thing that all the stem cell stocks have in their favor is that the bill in Missouri is likely due to pass in their favor by a decent margin.
I might leave some on the table, but it is gonna be tough for me to hold if this is up again big tomorrow.

Why not place a stop or trailing stop at say 15% profit?

i would do stop order at 15% profit... or depends on your gut stomach to handle the ride...willing to take chance and know the risk then go for it..
but not then just take the profit and be safe..
i miss out in making $12K by one day with SIGA.. i decided to take profit of 5% after week run and thought nothing was going to happen.. then next day.. dang news on smallpox news.. comes up goes 130% gain. ounch...
whats past is past....
good luck.. hope it keeps going up.. :)

I have a stop at about 12% that's got me feeling warm and fuzzy, my biggest fear is a gap down though.
Missouri passed the bill to allow stem cells, I wonder if we get a "sell the news" or a breakout rally
looks like a gap up, so far.
