Ethanol Gusher!

High oil prices, a heavy dose of government largesse and the gathering interest among consumers and politicians in weaning America from its petroleum habit have combined to set off a craze for ethanol among investors--from Bill Gates and Richard Branson on down.
Ethanol plants are sprouting all over the Midwest. And investors and policy wonks alike are trumpeting the corn-based fuel as the solution to climate change and America's dependence on Mideast oil.
Private equity investment in biofuels topped $1 billion in 2005, up from negligible amounts only two years ago, according to New Energy Finance, a renewable energy research firm. So far, ethanol is paying off handsomely, especially for those who got in early: Last year, the return on investment in the fuel surpassed 50%.
