The Blackberry reminds me of energy drinks like Hansen's Monster. Once upon a time, I saw everyone with a Monster and they were all the rage. Then eventually everyone got sick of them and left them for dead.

In the same way, thats how I see the Blackberry. Imagine being at home with your family spending quality time just to see this damned thing vibrate and ring. You get so sick of this thing that it becomes more of a nuisance then a luxury. At work, when you had a Blackberry then you were someone important. Now, if you have a Blackberry, then your just a tool. No one at my work sends emails anymore because they know that these Blackberry fools will always deliver some smart remark.

Im guessing with that awful earnings call from RIMM is the start of a new downtrend that will take the stock much lower as people refuse to carry these damned Blackberries. Just like HANS, when a growth momentum stock like RIMM is no longer growing then everyone starts to sell the stock on any strength.

Folks, good time to take this short.

Of all the smart phones this has the widest acceptance in the business world. If you are connected, then you are connected by blackberry. If nothing else, their network will produce revenue throughout the recession we are in. Couple that with the strength of the Canadian banking system and you have a company that will come out ahead of most others in this market. I actually bought RIMM at $56.75 today and it closed at $59.66. That was an opportunity. IMO if you get another opportunity like today, put on a small position.

The most recent company report, and concomitant earnings miss, had nothing to do with slowing growth. In fact, it was quite the opposite. RIMM sited costs associated with multiple product launches as the reason for the miss. Revenue remained strong. That is not to say it will remain strong as the globe is facing the head winds of recession which should limit corporate cap ex. However, unless you think globalization and the fact technology is assisting its advance is going to die out like the dinosaurs I wouldn't bet against RIMM long term.

As godoftrading stated, Blackberry is nearly ubiquitous in the business world. They don't call them Crackberries for nothing. As webinars, remote meetings, and large media files become more common the necessity for a Blackberry will too. My wife travels to Europe and Asia for business a few times a year and she is always given the newest high powered Blackberry to facilitate the trip since the land-line infrastructure is sketchy at best. Her employer wouldn't think to send her to NY City without one let alone overseas.

Folks, good time to take this short.

When RIMM was at 140+, didn't think about shorting. Now the stock is at 55 or so, think about shorting??? I think the downside maybe limited that it would bounce in range for a while.

I don't think the OP could be more wrong. Blackberry is gaining a huge following in the "social user" market and is still the standard for mobile communication in the business sector.

Agreed. Again, I have a good friend that is a product rep for RIMM and these things are moving. With that being said I'm not holding out for a rebound anytime soon. This market is viscious. Good stocks are getting beat down for no reason.

Even P&G is getting whacked in this market. It is a great defensive play and in an environment where oil is falling shares of P&G should be rising. It's brutal out there.

I've put money to work but don't think I can take the pain anymore. I will keep the remaining powder dry for a sign we're not facing too many more 500 point down days.

I think BB is going to do well this season. At my college a blackberry is the standard thing to have now along with a North Face backpack and a vineyard vines fleece. Blackberry is the phone kids want to have. I only see that continuing to get bigger. My .02.

Yup. As a college student and a Verizon customer I can sit here right now and say that if this thing is as good as it looks I'll be buying it in the next few months. (Once my contract is up for renewal).

its also a standard tool in the wild world of IT support too.

Cisco, Linux, Windows, Check Point, NetScreen etc ... all need to send alerts of trouble somewhere ..........

Call verizon and ask about your contract being up. I called ATT today and they were pushing me to get a new phone even though my contract was not up at no charge. They are sending me the 8820 until the BOLD comes out and then will upgrade me to that phone. I currently have the 8310 curve i think it is called. Blackberry is HUGE at colleges.

When does the Storm come out? Do you know? I may have to do that if they'll push me to get it (The data plan alone I would think would make it worth it for them). If they keep up their normal policies though I'll have to wait till mid July...which wouldn't be that bad so I'm not too worried.

blackberry wont die because of ridiculous IT departments. I can tell you that at my firm, I have an iphone that we're testing and my IT department has been trying to undermine my usage of the device. They dont want to have to deal with new devices - they'd rather stick to tried and true. it's just inertia, and it's frustrating as all hell, because i like my Iphone about 100x better than my blackberry.
