Hey guys,

I'm 23, in college, and I think I would like to start a portfolio. I already have an E*TRADE account, but I have no idea what to invest in. I have some ideas that I would like to pursue, such as semiconductors, sustainable(green) tech, and I wouldn't mind having a little bit of some solid computer stocks, such as Apple, Microsoft, and Google.

I'm also interested in mutual funds, and other different types of investments, but i can tell its going to take a lot of learning to get comfortable with my knowledge base. That’s why I joined this forum, i am a member of a ton of forums for all my different interests, and this seems like a good one to add to the list.

So i guess the point of this post is just to get a little guidance from old pros, or people that were in my position not too long ago... suggested readings, suggested "beginner" investments, ect. I don’t have a whole lot of money, I’m hoping to put in 100$ or more every couple weeks (payday) and just get a slow start.

Anyway, thanks and I’ll see you around the forum.

If you have a 401K at work get in it, or open an IRA, and max it out before you put anything at risk in a non qualified account. Start with mutual funds until you have $10k, then consider individual stocks.
Get "The Millionaire Mind" by Thomas Stanley, and "24 Essential Lessons for Investment Success" by William O'Neil
I have a daughter in college, so I know your time is occupied, and probably your money as well, but reading is the only way to get the information you need. I can't help with the time, but I'll send you both books, at my expense, if you like. PM me if you're interested.

Until you mentioned it I was unaware they existed. I would be cautious of any info dispersed in this manner because the folks who put it out are unaccountable.

Yes, I understand what you are saying. Be careful for the "garbage in, garbage out."

Those two books you referenced above are a good starting point though.
