On Scottrade's site you can go to trade tab, click on "cd's and bonds" choose preferred stock and get a pretty good list of available offerings. Don't really know if someone without an account can access that info, never tried before I opened my account.
You can buy those stocks just like any other stock if you know the ticker symbol.
Preferred trade a lot like bonds. Not much change in price but pretty good yield. Right now some of the better financials are good buys pricing at around $19.50 with a face value of $25.00 and a coupon of $5 to $6. Check out BACpI. Not all brokers offer.
Friday night is kind of a bad time to ask a question on this forum. Everybody is exhausted and decompressing.

P.S..............If you don't want to mess with picking individual preffered stocks, there are two pref. ETF's that get you a basket of them in one investment.
Check out: PFF current yield 8%.......PEY current yield 6.3%
You would buy these for income, not for growth or capital gain.
