Take-Two Interactive Continues Tailspin

Take Two Interactive Shares Continue Slide After Subpoena News
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Take-Two Interactive Inc. continued their slide Wednesday following Monday's news that officials requested documents from the video game maker relating to corporate governing practices and hidden scenes in one of its games.

Shares lost 13 cents to $10.72 in midday trading on the Nasdaq after bottoming out at $10.34 earlier in the day. The stock declined 16 percent to close at $10.85 the day before, following the company's announcement late Monday that the Manhattan District Attorney requested the broad-ranging records on June 19.
The subpoenaed records cover audits, partnering agreements, earnings results and acquisitions. The company has not been named as the target of an investigation.
Other subpoenaed documents are said to be connected to whether or not company officers and directors knew of secret, sexually explicit scenes that were uncovered in its popular game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas."
Some analysts reacted by suspending or lowering target prices.
But Janco Partners Inc. analyst Mike Hickey weighed in Wednesday with a client note urging investors with "extraordinarily high risk tolerance" to buy shares on a recent pullback in stock price. He reiterated his "Buy" rating and $22 target price.
The investigation may prompt some changes in the company's management team, with whom some investors have become disillusioned, Hickey said. The addition of new management could boost the company's credibility, he added.
The analyst noted that the Federal Trade Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission recently gave the company's documents a "scrubbing" and said he is unsure what the agencies might have missed. He said the new inquiry may be "politically motivated."
"To the best we can determine, the District Attorney's document request could be a look at the company's stock option practices," he wrote. However, he said he does not believe that any criminal investigation of executive stock options would hurt the company's finances.
Hickey said he believes that the video-game industry is poised to grow and said he expects Take-Two's "Grand Theft Auto" franchise will remain successful.
Shares of Take-Two Interactive have ranged between $9.85 and $28.16 over the past year.
