Let's start an "IPOs of the week" thread. We can discuss/argue/consider the coming week's IPOs.

This week is highlighted by Burger King, Penson Financial, and Darwin Underwriters (next week, by the way, is MasterCard and Vonage).

I personally like Burger King as a good flip if you can get in "cheap" and early, and I also like Penson for the mid/long-term. It seem slike they have a bit of a monopoly and strong market share. Don't really know much about Darwin Underwriters.

So, what are your thoughts on BK, PF, or DU?

Definitely do not stay in BK for more than a week if you are gonna get in at all. BK just has too much competittion to be a stock. Got in too late.

As for the others - Penson seems alright...don't know anything about Darwin.
Mastercard is a long term...I'd get in that one. Mastercard=GREEEN
Just look at those 20% interest rates
20% interest rates = money = high stock price!

As for Vonage - ehh...Id keep it for a week just like BK...but you probably wont get in it unless you are a subscriber or institution.

IPO's are very much dependent on market sentiment. Ergo, I wouldn't touch an IPO in this tape with a ten foot poll.

So far Penson had a great IPO today.

Burger King goes tomorrow...

I wouldn't hold BK for too long. They are losing a lot of their business to McDonalds and the sub joints. A lot of their establishments and franchisees are going out of business. We did a project on them in my management class and they don't look like a good long term hold. However if u see the chance for a good trade, more power to ya.

BKC climbing during these rough times. Got in at $17.50 since Scottrade lagged on the stocks openning for several minutes. upto $18.22 at the moment, with descent momentum I can see 3 points to bell.

Burger King seems to be one of the few gainers in this down market. Tried to get in on the simulator, for the monthly contest. but they didn't have it listed yet. They were talking about it on CNBC and claim that business will go up as gas prices, etc go up. According to them, people will move down from higher priced fast food to BK!

Burger King up better on its second day of trading then its first.

Penson had a great opening of trading.

Darwin did too.

Next week highlighted by Mastercard and Vonage. Seems like Mastercard is hot hot hot, and vonage is cooling off a bit -- much skepticism of the potential of that business.

I expect MA to turn up like GOOG did after its IPO.

So far, the expected pricing date is May 24. I think that means trading will happen sometime after the bell on May 25, although I have done the IPO-watch thing before, and the time of the first open trading seems often difficult to discern.

Why Morningstar is estimating MasterCard price $80 based of 2005 P/E ratio of 32? Most finance industry is trading much lower P/E, e.g Citigroup is trading at P/E of 10.

If I look at other finance industry then IPO price tag of $42-43 is no bargain to me. Once it trades on the open market and the price is driven up the ones that buy it and are left holding the bag will lose big time.

You may want to read the article in Fortune regarding MasterCard and its legal troubles. If I recollect correctly, they had settled the previous ligitation with about 1B$. This time the estimates are larger than that! So watch out, the IPO aims to raise 2.5B in capital. And pretty much all of that may get wiped out if they have legal troubles.

Of course, I could be wrong too.
Remember GOOG, BIDU, and CBOT, they all went up like a rocket !

Just a word of caution. Please do your own DD. I have no plans to by the stock.

No major IPOs announced for the next few weeks. I guess Wall St.'s taking a bit of a break from the past two weeks where we've seen Burger King, Vonage, MasterCard, Penson, Darwin Underwriters, Mueller Water.

Here's a link to these 6 recent IPOs to take a quick look at their prices -- in short, Mastercard was the winner of the 6, and Vonage was the worst performing.
