I have set up a trading simulator for May - 1st prize is $100, 2nd and 3rd prizes are trading books.
You can join at anytime during the month. You must use the same username as you use here. This thread will be used to discuss the game and post updates on the standings.
You start with $100,000 and you can trade stocks, options and you can even short. Whoever has the highest amount at the close of trading on May 31, 2006 wins.
The trading simulator/contest is open only to registered members of this forum.

I encountered numerous problems as well, but a request to Thierry and his quick response took care of it.

I created an account and made a purchase yesterday as well, but can find no way to access it. Guess this is above my computer skills.

Is it necessary to have bid and ask shown on entries? The reason for asking is that I bought 61,000 shares of BAJFF, only because the simulator would not let me buy BAJ.V in Canada and it only shows close each day. At yesterday's close it stood at 1.78, which x 61,000 = $108,580.00.

I have 7 open trades since yesterday!!! shes a lil slow..
XB don't feel to bad it wouldn't let me buy WNP.V or AXU.TO
and that would of given me a nice return also.. o well..

It did accept my trade, but each day all it says is "not trading", with the price now .15 over my buy limit. It should have executed on the first day.

Did you enter the symbol as C.BAJ??
That's how you have to enter the symbols for all Canadian stocks.. I bought SWP.TO with no problem. I had to enter it C.SWP
also, it will only let you buy up to 10% of the daily volume.. If the stock only traded 10,000 shares up to that point, you can only by 1000

That clarifies it. Now I know what .10 on the volume line means, something that made no sense to me til now. Thanks, guess I'll look for something that I am able to trade.

Geesh I take one day off and everyone has delusions of granduer! I have a technical question about the simulator contest. I bought some CE at the sucker 52 week high. It is planned to split on the last day of May. Will this post on my rankings or is that too late to be tallied? BTW- Thierry, thank you for what you do on this board!

splits are adjusted for 15 minutes delayed and the tally will be done after the close so you should be OK. We'll keep an eye on it just in case.

If we go three days without trading, are we eliminated? I had problems starting out, then was preoccupied when caught deep into margin with STP's fall. After looking at the standings, I now come back to find I was removed 3 days after my last post in this thread, and my password is inoperable.

If someone doesent trade at all could they still win?
I find that unfair, but whatever you feel is right shall be good. Its just kinda weird that say someone with 100,000 that didnt do anything can win.
Thierry Martin

Well, you could argue that knowing when to be in cash and out of the market is a skill too. But I agree, and as a matter of fact, when someone joins the competition, if they don't trade within 10 days, I delete their account. I will notify the new players of this, and I will delete any accounts without some trade activity before the end of the game. Imagine if the base amount of $100,000 turned out to be the second place winner, if we didn't have this rule there could be 30 or 40 players tied for second place!

You can join again, PM me if you forgot your signup link. There were a dozen players tied for 2nd place with no trading activity, so I had to clean it up.

I love the simulator first off. Second, i think it is important to know when to be cash, but don't like the idea of a huge tie of zombies, so i think its fair you have to trade something. That being said, i was thinking it was not very fair if you can just not trade for 3 days, get booted, then come back and start fresh (woulda changed my perspective). Should be someway to fix that..like you get back what you got booted with. Prolly way too much work though, so let's just all enjoy and remeber it's a game. Now you wanna talk real portfolios, then you will hear some anger!

You can join any time, we roll everyone back to $100,000 at the beginning of the month.
If there was more shorting, I think the results might be different! Shorting is allowed, but very few traders are good at it.

Aaarrggghhh!
I guess my account was deleted! I was staying in cash as the market had been SO bad! I did try to get into the new Burger King IPO on the first day, but the simulator didn't recognize the symbol!

I agree... shorting is alot tougher than people think.. totally different approach needed than when you trade on the long side

Thierry,
I never did get the OPTIONS feature to work... what's the trick with that?

You just choose trade options in the menu - what kind of problem are you having?

I don't know.. it just didn't seem to work... I don't know if I had the symbol wrong or what
also, I made a trade using Canadian stocks and I sold the stock for a gain but it didn't seem to show up in the account at all....
Is the Canadian dollar feature working?

You can trade Canadian stocks but the portfolio is set to only track the US stocks for the contest.

Duh!
I guess I didn't even realize that.. up to this point my Canadian trades were insignificant... so I didn't realize they were counting... haha..
Oh well.
Thanks
I think I finally figured out the options thing....
