Stock Picking Challenge

Winner gets a free hardcover copy of Conquer the Crash!

Pick a stock with an entry price between $2.00 - $5.00 that trades no less than 100k shares daily volume that you think will go up in the next five days.

Your entry price can be a limit or market at open order.

Your entry price must be within the trading range of that stock during the next 5 days for your pick to be activated.

Rules

1. stock priced between 2.00 - 5.00

2. volume of no less than 100k daily. If a stock fails to meet 100k at any point in the week it is disqualified for the duration of the week.

3. entry price must be achieved during daily market 9:30 - 4:00 times (no pre market or after hour prices allowed)

5. one ticker per forum member

6. a ticker can be used once per challenge - if you want to use the same ticker for next week you must be the first to call it after Friday's market close (4:00 est)

7. once an entry and ticker is selected and posted, there is no changing the entry or ticker.

8. entries for next challenge opens at Friday's market close (4:00 pm EST) and closes at 8:00 Monday (9:00 am EST)

GRSR is supposed to be doing a 5/2 split on tuesday of next week. I'd like to play this. It's currently at $5, which will adjust to $2. It will probably gap up over $5 on monday so I won't try to enter there. I'll try a $2.10 entry point, post split. (In otherwords it won't qualify at least until it splits and maybe not after that either!) Also, the volume is usually too low but it will be high enough after the split! (Maybe high enough without it, next week.) What is the exact rule on volume qualification? 100K plus 22 day average, 100K+ every day that week, or 100K+ on the day it qualifies by price?

So in summary - GRSR.PK at $2.10! (If it qualifies.)

(Otherwise I'll just play NXG again at open.)

I didn't make the rules, but I'm the only one that seems to be running the challenge last week and this week, so I guess I have some say.

Tried to change the rules last week through a poll, but the "keep the rules the same" group won that.

Personally, unless someone objects, as long as the "average volume" in yahoo finance says over 100,000, as of the Friday when we do the picks for the next week, that makes the stock qualify. I don't see the point in a rule that the entrant can't control, such as the volume for the following week. I also think the closing price on Friday being between $2 and $5 is the fair way to qualify the price, not this ridiculous business of what price it hits next week.

I thinks these rule changes would keep the character of the game, yet make it easier for both the participants and the person who runs the game, a lot easier and clearer.

I have added a poll to the thread, and you should vote, because I will go with the wishes of the voters here.

I'd like the rule to be the average volume per Yahoo! to be 100,000 as of the Friday we open the contest for the following week. That would make your pick invalid.

I know I made it sound like a burden... it came out wrong. I just meant that it would be easier for me, or anyone else running the challenge, if we didn't have to check every non-qualified entry and limit order every day for qualification. I would really like it if the stocks were picked and qualified according to their Friday night close. Open price on Monday is the entry price. It isn't so bad now, but if the contest grows in popularity, it is going to be very time consuming for the administrator the way the rules are now. I know that I won't be able to run it if it gets any more popular, and I have to double-check every entry every day.

The way I have it set up now, once I enter the data, the prices etc. are updated automatically. But this qualified / entry price business drives me crazy, because it requires so much time.

It sounds like you have a very valid point. I'll agree, and I think everyone would since it will save whoever tracks the challenge a lot of time. If people don't pick a stock between $2 & $5 with over 100K for volume, then they will not qualify for the weekly challenge. We'll also have to take the opening price, but the rules would be the same for everyone.

THIERRY:
When i started the game i wanted it to be close to real time market trading as i could. I made the rule between 2-5 cause that was the normal stock price being traded at that time.
volume was 100k to eliminate the extreamly thin stocks traded.
exicution was up to the member as to open=market order, or specific entry target= limit order.
It is very time consuming to track all these at certain prices and i feel it is what the person wan'ts who is running the challenge for he/she is the one donating the time to run the challenge. if it didn't take so much time to do each night i would still be doing it.

I did vote for the rule change cause i know what it takes to do this challenge.

I've been looking at a software solution for doing a real time stock simulation, where you would get $100,000, for example, and within whatever time limit we set, you enter market or limit orders, short or long, for whatever stocks you want. We could have the results posted on a thread here with a discussion and a nice prize. This could be in addition to this contest, which seems to have a life of its own.

I'm a tad confused, are we using the open price or the fri close price? Everyone except teno4212 has a paid price of the open. If he called 2.00 and it gaps up does that qualify?

The open price on Monday is the "price paid" (unless an entry price other than "open on Monday" is used) - the only change I have made, is that the stock being qualified or not is based on its closing price on Friday. In other words, if the stock closes on Friday at 1.99, it is not eligible for the contest, and can't be entered.

As long as the stock closed between 2.00 and 5.00 on Friday, with the "average volume" in Yahoo! Finance listed at 100,000 or above, it is a valid entry. That way, we know which stocks are good to go. You can still pick an entry price (between 2.00 and 5.00) or a market open price for Monday.

In order for the entry price to be triggered for stocks with limit orders, that price has to be within the "trading range" according to Yahoo! Finance for that day. Then we show that pick as a qualified entry, at the chosen price. All the market open picks are entered at the opening price on Monday.

Since the rule change was sudden, and not everyone understood that they had changed, I let a couple of picks that closed under 2.00 on Friday into the contest, as long as they hit the 2.00 price minimum during the week of the contest.

BOOO - I accidentally deleted your post - sorry about that. Nothing personal, beyond how I already feel about you. It was one of your rude ones anyway. I'm sure you can recreate it, or make it even better.

You know, I think that's the most participation we've seen for this contest so far.

I'm willing to share three-way credit on this one.

You may want to wait though, it could head south by the end of the week....

Well I just sold my real life NXG for 4.65. Nice run up.

Great bottom dredging pick there Jacob on the Dana corp! Is Jacob still around or did he leave with Booo??

Well,I'm totally new to the Trading World. I've been a Studio/Live Drummer for 15 years and now own a music store in the midwest. Knowing nothing about many stocks I picked a few on my recently opened online account from my interests (music & cars). So boring you with my personal history I will tell you my "Weekly Stock Challenge" pick>>DCNAQ<<(Dana Corp.,they make car stuff..hence the car interests). I'm not sure if this meets the rules, but in real life I purchased this not long ago for $1.08....and now its at $3.00. It seems to be headed in the right direction for me! Call it beginners luck, but thats my pick and I'll take it any way I can. Rock on!

TM,

Can I short during this weekly challenge. I'd definitely gamble that Bernanke will give a hint of another raise on top of one on Wednesday. If I can short, I'd like to short NXG @ open.

I guess I'm running it again, and shorting is OK with me!
