so basically what the DOW and COMPQ are doing in the top left corner...
the first box on the top left contains 4+ stocks that i actively trade and the calls/puts for them
the second box on the top right contains stocks/options that im considering to trade on a daily or weekly level
then at the bottom.. i have 3 charts open... normally all 3 are 5 minute charts or i have 1 daily and 2 5 min charts open..
if i can sit at my screen all day, ill normally keep the 5 min charts open.. if i know i have to get up frequently or on occassion, ill typically have 15 min charts open
on my charts.. i normally have the 5sma, 8sma open or the 20sma and 40sma open or the 20sma and 200sma open... then i have bollinger bands with 20sma and 2 deviation, 2 period rsi open, and cci open.. the cci i adjust depending on if im using a 5min chart or 15 min chart
a lot of times ill also switch out and use volume and/or macd as well

You can see what I am looking at
in this link to a screen capture - sized down for folks with smaller screens (http://i25.tinypic.com/zmha92.jpg)
My screen resolution is 1680x1050, and you can see that I could use a second screen.
The screen is divided into two areas. The area on the right is the Schwab trading software. In that area there are:
Two trading windows
One for stocks
The second for options
Three Chart Windows
One for the stock being analyzed, with tabs for different time frames
The second for market indexes, including three time frames for the VIX
The third tabbed to show intraday info for 15 different stocks
On the left side of the screen are three windows
One for the chat room
A second, below and left, for emoticons
And a third for one-on-one conversations. In this case, it is with WSE
NOTE: The two trading windows and the first chart window are linked together so that they will show information about the stock symbol selected for the stock trading window.
There are several other 'windows' in both the trading software and the 'Windows' display that are minimized.
Those are the windows I would show with a second monitor.

I am not a pro like you guys, mine is just the chat window, my questrade acct, and my etrade acct and then just a whole bunch of tabs.
But I am in the process of setting up a trading software on my separate PC in my office. In my room I have a Mac and a lot of trading software's don't work well with it unless I split the HD up in to Windows and Mac, but then I'd have to go back and forth and install XP on my MAC, which I don't like.
I might look in to doing that in the future, once I get comfortable with the trading system.

one thing i suggest doing is keeping a separate computer or laptop for all of your trades.. always good to have a virus, trojan, ad free system when you have plenty of valuable info there

hey net, i was looking at your screen and wondered about a couple of things...
in chart #1, what are the grey bars on the left? are those used as aid to determine strength in the price area?
i noticed you dont have any indicators up.. do you do your analysis away from your trading time and then trade simply based on price?

my charts arent as fancy as yours... i have an account with tradeking which doesnt really offer any real tools and i have one at options xpress which is just a little better than using yahoo finance lol

btw wse, i think what youre referring to is volume by price and youre right on your guess.. its volume based on where the closing price falls.. its a pretty fair indicator for those like me looking for a more conservative approach in the market.

Rainman, you are correct.
Those are volume at price bars

do you guys think its better to use that vs looking at a chart and flat out determining support/resistance the old fashioned way?

This is just a different way to look at the data.
On very compact charts, VAP is readable and volume bars are not.
On daily charts, VAP can help qualify support/resistance levels.
That is, it acts as a confirming factor to indicate how strong a support/resistance level is.
Volume bars and support/resistance lines are still my primary tools in this area.

My day trading set-up can be found here

But since my company switched over to an uber secure network, and they squashed my bringing a laptop and pirating wireless networks after about 2 days, I have switched to the Forex for now.
As you can see in this picture below, I am still keeping things simple.
3475
I trade on a 14 inch laptop that has a permanent home next to my bed with nice loud alarms to wake me up a 4am during the London session. I trade 1 pair, and use simple support/resistance lines.
The "purple" (they are actually red) lines are alarms I have set at prices that I might enter a trade at depending on the price action. The solid black lines are major support/resistance. Aside from that, I use no other indicators. The black box in the lower left-hand corner is my order entry program. My clock is set for GMT, as are my charts.
I use a method developed by some kid named NickB. He has a forum. Google it. It's good stuff. His forex method basically mimicks my stock day trading method, so it works well for me.
I'm not a big fan of the Forex. Though it is profitable, I miss the fast paced action of the stock market. I am also not a fan of the whole 3am start to the London session. Most of the action on my pair takes place between 4-8 am. So for that I have to end this post with a double "F YOU DAY JOB!"

I don't have an account with TOS, but I really like their trading software out of all the brokerages' I've seen so far. For those who haven't tried ToS' software, here is what it looks like:
http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/3637/platformib7.jpg
tabs: http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/8920/tabsvz7.jpg
One pet peeve I have had with all other platforms I've used is the lack of tabs or some other sort pagination. Personally, I think it makes the platform much more organized & easy to use than managing a bunch of independant windows.
