With all the new posters in here and the myriad different trading styles...I'm curious to the type of traders/investors using this forum. I can't find the old "poll" option, so this may be just another thread.
From what I see, we have many types from disciplined, well-knowledged traders to the new investor "jumping in" on a tip. Both win and lose, so right or wrong, novice or seasoned, does not really matter. It's all about the challenge.
I target swings and position trades and the occasional day trade as income generating positions. Long term investments are under other accounts and profits from trading are moved into these accounts accordingly. I don't talk long term in this forum.
So.........I'll digress and ask this: What type of trader/investor are you?
By the way...I still enjoy this forum over many others and thanks to the new posters for stepping up and offering their insight/opinions. 8) Luc

I'm a newbie studying to be a swing trader, and this market has been challenging to say the least. I've spent more on commission than I've made or lost. I'm moving to IB, so I can make trades for $1/$2.

My name says it all, but I'm up 64% since February 2 on my Scottrade account!
Newbie. Trying to develop a style.

Impressive, InvestingMorron. I probably should adopt your style. How in the world did you manage to do that?

Ok, no sleep and baby kicking has made me nutso today...so don't mind my slightly out of character outrageous posts, it is a day for the type purchases one would expect to see if the market was a Jaripeo (see, I can't even speak english today, let alone trade).
I am definitely a super-newbie and trying out all sorts of ways of determining what to buy, but one thing I do not do, EVER, is buy based purely on a recommendation, no matter how good it seems, the news and co has got to make me believeee, by their financials and what they are embarking upon in the future. I also only play with money I can afford to lose, I try to see it as Vegas, but with seemingly better odds right now, just because I am winning, doesn't mean I can't lose, but I remain positive about the learning experiences in both.
I have stocks all across the board and most of done ok (1-3%) and two have done awesome imo (8 and 14%), but that's just since Dec 2005, so who knows what is in store for the future. I have one crap stock, which is not worth even throwing out, so I just keep it around, ya never know!
I am now experimenting with buying and dumping based on cyclical data in charts and want to try out shorting soon. But basically just trying out all kinds of strategies and decision making in small doses to see what works best for me.
OK, if none of that made any sense, forgive my brain. Late-stage pregnancy is like having one of those zombies from night of the living dead begging for your brains :(

Predominantly conservative in 403b, IRA etc. Mainly been in real estate the last few years. Saw Cramer a while back and decided to throw some fun money into speculating. So my focus on this forum is pretty high risk high return. And as an aside, the guys who do the grunt work around here have given me a couple nice stocks and have kept me above the line. Thanks go out to them.

BOO got jokes today. Wokka wokka wokka!
I started with 1000. The bulk of that gain has come from playing gaps on JKRI, CKEI, and PCCE. I studied the movement and momentum, and got in when I thought I could. JKRI I have had the most success with. I could have easily had a 3 bagger with them, but opted for a 50% gain instead.

I have my retirement in ROTHS and a 403B. I have an ameritrade account that UI started with $5k and with winners and adding on in a year I am over $10K. I have 70% of my "mad money" in relatively conservative dividend payers (ROME). 20% speculation (JDSU) and 10% cash. So I am conservative but willing to take some chances. I am up 15% since Jan thanks to some quick run ups in AMTD and CCC.

I bought MSEV yesterday for .1845 with $650 for about $10 because oil was going up, and it seemed like a popular stock. I sell today for .185 for about $10. I lost about $20 to Scottrade, and made about $2. Net loss of $18. I've done this kind of trade about 20 times.

There is an old saying that goes..."if you want to make money in the stock market, become a broker". I have to chuckle at that one!!

Ah, I see. Commissions are killing you because, well, you're letting them kill you without giving yourself the opportunity to make some money to cover for them. The only way I would get rid of a stock like that in the same day is a huge gain or a loss that I'm willing to cut off.
Give them time to make some money before being trigger happy and losing your money for nothing!

I just didn't follow one of my weird newbie rules, sell in the morning, buy in the afternoon...this is where craziness gets you...trying to make back your commission charges!

Short, short, short! I have finally started to make money in the market and I'm sold on this method, so to speak. LOL

That's the worst part about penny stocks or whatever you want to call them because you don't have any good basis or prediction on where its heading. In any case, you have to buy plenty of shares of a stock so that a little move will allow you to get out with a profit after fees. I try to get at least 500+ (the higher, the better) on $2-5 ones and a little .30-.50 move up will give you at least a couple of hundreds.
I'm a swing trader but as always, still learning different techniques...you can never learn enough.

Thought I would "pop" this back up since it seems to be a topic for new traders.
