Hi everyone. I have been reading this forum for a few months now and find it very helpful. I am fairly new to investing (Jan06) and I had a question about industry anaylsis. When companies or certain sectors are mentioned on Cramer's show or even in this forum, is there a way to find other lesser known companies in the same sector that i might be able to play off of (an example would be finding another titanium manufacturer besides ATI)? I've seen lists of symbols divided into different sectors but that seemed like a waste of time having to go through every symbol to find a decent company. How do you guys discover these lesser known companies? I don't mind doing the work and going through all the symbols in a sector but I would think there has to a more efficent way. I am trying to hone my research skills and gain more knowledge so I can keep up with you guys.

Use ShareBuilder's stock research tool, you can search by sector and there are alot of picks.

If you're looking for titanium try TIE. It's had a good run but looks to be pulling back.

www.clearstation.com is a free site to check out other companies in the same industry. MSN research also has a similar feature.

Look at the stock TICKER on Yahoo Finance. On the left hand side there is a link to competitors. And then look up eack of the competitors and click the link for competitors. This will give you a pretty broad look at the field and you can narrow down fron there after looking at the profile for each competitor.

Using Internet Explorer, try moneycentral.msn.com and on the left side, click on Stock Research then again on the left Stock Screener. Or just use this link (http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/finder/customstocks.asp)directly.

You can add a criteria such as "Industry Name" = Drugs->Biotechnology and hit Run Search and you'll see them all come up. At the top right increase it from 25 matches to 200 matches to get them all.

I just ran it and got 180 biotech companies in the list, from Abgenix AGBX to Zonagen ZONA.

I reviewed the MS Stock Screener on my show MMM-002. Check it out on iTunes: look for Mad Money Machine podcast or just go to http://MadMoneyMachine.com

For some reason since I used yahoo! finance most of the time for looking up quotes and news, I find their HTML stock screener (http://screen.finance.yahoo.com/stocks.html) better than any site except for Morningstar (http://www.morningstar.com/Cover/Stocks.html?pgid=hetabstocks) which also gives you a good screener (http://screen.morningstar.com/StockSelector.html?ssection=StockScreener). And also, if you want to go deep into technical analysis, Stock charts (http://stockcharts.com/def/servlet/SC.scan?) has a good pre-defined screener as well. I think I'm getting carried away now! ;)
