{"s" : "bqi,cnq,cvx,mro,noa,ptr,rds-b,su","k" : "c10,l10,p20,t10","o" : "","j" : ""} Extracting oil from sands is an expensive process, and when crude futures tumbled during the recession, it was hardly economical. Now that the economy appears to be stabilizing, commodities are following suit, and oil sands stocks are back in focus.

Currently, the Oil Sands Stocks Index has four components. The large-cap plays, Suncor Energy (NYSE: SU - News) and Canadian Natural Resources (NYSE: CNQ - News) are both up by 9% or more in the last month. Meanwhile, small-caps Oilsands Quest (AMEX: BQI - News) and North American Energy Partners (NYSE: NOA - News) are mixed. The former has shot up by 42% for the period, while the latter fell by -9%.

Much of the sector's recent appeal is attributable to hype surrounding investments by some major oil players. In early September, we covered China's interest in oil sands, specifically a $2 billion acquisition by PetroChina (NYSE: PTR - News).

According to a New York Times report released Friday, the Canadian and Alberta governments are helping clean up another oil sands project owned by Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-A - News, RDS-B - News), Marathon Oil (NYSE: MRO - News), and Chevron (NYSE: CVX - News).

As more components of the Big Oil and Gas Stocks Index take interest in oil sands, it will be interesting to see if they take interest in acquisition of the sector's smaller public players. Oilsands Quest could be easily swallowed by any of the largest oil companies, although any bets on a buyout would be pure speculation at this point.

As of this writing, the Oil Sands Stocks Index is one of the top-40 performing tickerspy Indexes over the last month, up by 9.5%.

Investors can track six different oil Indexes and view a suite of performance metrics at tickerspy.com.

What do you mean back into a recession? Where have you been for the last 2 years. This is the worse i have seen in my 63 years, friends losing jobs and houses and the ones who are still working have taken pay cuts and benifit cuts. Employees being told after they recieve cuts well your lucky to still have a job. But don't worry as our govt. says things are getting better, yea right. Well at least we will have health care for everyone, yea right. If your a young healthy person pay the fine it will be alot cheaper. For now trade this market up and down.

Chinaman...what do you mean, "If you're young and healthy, pay the fine"...?

chinaman711
10-16-2009, 02:34 PM
If the health care bill goes thru you will not have a choice, you either take the insurance or pay a fine for not having insurance. Spread the wealth ya right. Now if you are working for a good company and you have insurance they will let you keep it but who knows if companys will provide insurance anymore. I wouldn't would you.

c-man, im glad to see this one moving again! I'm averaged in around 3 bucks because I loaded up the last time it was running a little...and even bought some as high as 5. Where do you see this one going?

Without a buyout offer, it can't go too far, it'll just run on oil price speculation...IMO.

With virtually all of the asian countries searching around the world to lock up supplies of oil and with those rich oil sands in BP's backyard south of prudo bay, someone is going to buy these guys. When you look at the valuations of the Canadian oil trusts it is almost obvious that there is value here.

If it any help, all of my biggest money makers/trades happened when I would get in/buy, and the stock would drop a little more but not too much, and in time the stock would blow back up and I'd cash-out.

In many cases, patience is a virtue. So long as the stock is a good one and it has historically gone back up after having gone down, like most stocks out there do, you will be just fine.

I'm waiting on 3 stocks to go back up and 2 of them are ones that I have never traded before but I have the faith.

CMan, what signals are you watching on BQI?

None of the usual indicators are very helpful at the moment and all are showing the trend is slowing. I'd like to see a reversal candle pattern but all we have are the three black crows, granted they are coming in on less volume which is nice.

Be advised a couple subscription advisory services picked up on the mega volume last week and were pumping BQI. They've since issued sell orders but I don't think anyone holding BQI in the last 2 weeks is looking for anything other than a quick flip so this puppy can turn on a dime as we saw on 10/21.

BQI doesn't have significant resistance until $2 and may even see $3 longer term. However, I'm not ballsy enough to step in and call a bottom. I'd like to think the bearish momentum of the last 3 days will subside soon but I'm not seeing a confirmation just yet.

That's what I was thinking at $1.528O, so I figured it was a good buy. I don't mind waiting to get a profit, but it's just that notion of the second you buy something and she tanks......just kinda gets under my skin.

Second time I got stopped out in two weeks. One with profit, one without. Couple of things happening here, oil is down and the US dollar is up against the Canadian dollar. Both bad for BQI. Going to get back in when the dust settles. I think that both the dollar strength and the drop in oil are temporary. In the mean time, live to fight another day.

Not hearing much from bqi but there was an upgrade with a new target of $3. We did get a close above 1.19 and bqi should test 1.30 soon. If bqi gets thru 1.36 then we may see 1.67 again. Long term I think Madcow and I will be very happy with BQI. Remember SU went from 3 to 140 in 11 years. Good luck

I would stay away from BQI, the CEO is gone and my guess is that he will take his own company public. The only thing that will get oil sands plays running again is $100 oil imo. If Hopkins takes his company public that might be a play, Bqi needs to partner up and not give away their leases as they did with the deal they gave Hopkins. JMHO
