View Full Version : How do you guys keep track of your trades? Excel?
i had set up an excel sheet. it was working for me for a while, then i realized. if i buy 300 shares of something, and i sell only 200 of them, there is no real formula to compensate that sale(not without me re-entering the info as 2 transactions.)
how do you guys keep track, or do you?

Scottrade has a history section to their site. I can check most things there. I don't have more than 6-8 positions at any one time and I can usually store in my head what my entry points were so no need for Excel.

Yes I have an excel spreadsheet to follow and record everything. I update it once a day.

I built a spreadsheet that shows entry, entry with comission, entry price per share with commission, 8% loss rate per share, break-even, 5% gain per share, and 10% gain per share. Free up you profile for e-mail and I can send it if you are comfortable with that.
i am aware of the scottrade earnings section, i just wanted something for myself that i could recategorize for my own purposes.
ok, here is another question since i am not so familiar with how i will be taxed and i may have misinterpreted the info told to me by the scottrade person.
do we have to keep track of our earnings/losses on each individual trade and report each one on our taxes or do we just get 1 general 1099 with the total gain/loss for the year and we get taxed on that?
thanks guys, y'all rule.

Luc1Grunt -
I am interested in your excel sheet if you are still willing to email it to me. I too have a excel sheet but it does not seem as complex as he one listed.
Meth -
You may want to search the web for a template, maybe microsoft, for an excel sheet that suits your needs.

32 Vickie, I'll need an e-mail to send it to ya. The rest....it's on the way. You can tweak as needed. Use the formulas in the "built" columns to copy for additional needs. The sheet is protected for all the formulas, so "unprotect" under tools if you need to change. This does not have formulas for multiple "entries", but that can be done easily by copying and then adjusting the formulas. Watch your formulas on the "sells" to insure they are correct.
All formulas are based on Scotytrade $7. For stocks under $1, I manually add the calculations because exit price will change based on 1/2% of principal.
Hope this is what you were after. It makes things easier when you are watching multiple stocks. I left a few on this copy as examples. Spaces between stock are for multiple entries, so double check that there is a formula in it. Happy trading.

Correction to my last post. Column "P" will have to be adjusted based on per share price. The sheet will reflect your trades, but you will have to adjust the profit to reflect per share on split sales.

Meth - you have to report each sale seperately from the 1099. It's like pulling teeth!! I hate doing it. Get a good bottle of wine and a couple of hours of your time!
It's easier with turbo tax but you still can't download the information directly from scottrade so you'll still have to post most things manually.
I'd like that, too, Luc1Grunt, if you don't mind: beingmarkh@hotmail.com
Many thanks..

i use excel and try and update it whenever i trade but that just don't happen all the time. most of my notes are on scrap paper. nice system i know, ease your jealousy.
luc1grunt: if u're not too worn out on the requests, mind firing me a copy of that spreadsheet too? it sounds to be leagues better than the basic list format i have.
