Pre-Market/After-Hours

What's the purpose of having pre-market and after-hours? Why not just call em regular ole hours?

Perhaps I'm missing a point here.......

Well normal market hours are 930am to 400PM

Some brokers will let you trade during off hours, pre or after.

Scottrade allows after market hour trading in Limit Orders ONLY until 8PM They dont seem to offer pre-market or early morning tradding, at least not with my account.

I am not sure about other brokers.
