Genzyme Q sales up 21 percent to $1.B
Tuesday 01/08/2008 1:31 PM ET - Xingu Financial News

Biotechnology company Genzyme Corp. said Tuesday its fourth-quarter revenue rose 21 percent to top Wall Street expectations, and said annual sales in its kidney and surgical orthopedic segments will reach $1 billion by 2011.

Speaking at JPMorgan's annual healthcare conference in San Francisco, Chairman and Chief Executive Henri A. Termeer said quarterly sales grew to $1.04 billion from $854 million a year earlier, and rose 20 percent to $3.8 billion in fiscal 2007 from $3.2 billion in the previous year.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial were expecting quarterly revenue of $989 million and full-year sales of $2.77 billion.

Termeer also reiterated Genzyme's outlook for strong growth, forecasting operating profit will total $4 per share in 2008 -- in line with consensus expectations -- and rise to about $7 per share by 2011.

The company said 2007 sales of Gaucher's disease treatment Cerezyme grew 13 percent to $1.1 billion. Genzyme also forecast that both its renal and biosurgery segments will generate annual sales of about $1 billion by 2011, helped by growth of kidney treatments Renagel and Renvela and osteoarthritis injection Synvisc-One, respectively.

Shares dipped 90 cents to $76.20 in afternoon trading, not far off the stock's 52-week high of $77.51. Some analysts had speculated earlier Tuesday that Genzyme paid too high a price to co-develop Isis Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s cholesterol drug mipomersen.

Late Monday, Genzyme said it will pay Isis $325 million to develop mipomersen, and up to $1.58 billion more if the drug is developed successfully and reaches sales benchmarks. The two companies will share revenue from the drug.

Mipomersen is currently in late-stage clinical testing as a treatment for familial hypercholesterolemia, an inherited disease that causes high levels of LDL, or "bad," cholesterol.

"While mipomersen has shown strong efficacy and is a solid strategic fit for Genzyme, we believe the price was relatively steep and safety questions could limit uptake in broader populations," said Brian Abrahams of CIBC World Markets in a note to clients.
