HOG is not a good opportunity to short at this juncture. All the bad news is discounted already. The stock is currently range bound in the $45-$50 levels since the announcement of trimmed FY '07 outlook by the company in early September. The % to be gained by shorting HOG is very minimal - bcoz the stock would not continue its southward journey at the same momentum as was the case when the stock started its southward journey in late 2006. The company is also to announce its impending Q4 '07 results coming 25th, which could trigger a rally. A better short opportunity would be the housing stocks - the turmoil which could continue this year also...

Anyone have any good shorting opportunities I can research?I'm working on some screens for shorting opportunities. I'm looking at swing trading across a week to a month. That said, I'll probably watch each trade like a hawk throughout each day.

The first screen I tried is a fairly naive model.

Choose a weak sector
See what stocks were overvalued in that sector according to Morningstar
Check these stocks against opinions from other sources.

The first pass yielded six stocks:

KBW & GHL in the finance sector look promisingly feeble.
NFLX rose 25% from a 22.89 open on 12/13 to a 28.70 close on 12/26. It has retraced every day since to close at 26.35 today, 1/2.
FLWS looks like a short call that is about 10 weeks late, but maybe it has more to go.
PCLN gained ~160% in 2007. It's hard to bet against that, but I might.
ANF looks vulnerable, with a possible double top forming and almost confirmed.

I'm still working up DD on this list. Also, I want to try a TA based screen and see if I get some of the same companies. Shared research and thoughts from others is always welcome. [Those participating will of course be part of "step #3" of the naive model.] :D

Im not sure if SIF can be shorted but whenever it gets near 20, I short it in the sim game here. Its worked out well a few times.

Banking companies such as BAC and Citibank are good shorts, imo.

The auto sector is another sector which one can short. Stocks like AXL - company with revenues more concentrated in US, PAG - broke down-wards of a 9 month consolidation.

i dont really short individual stock unless they dont have any options available, right now i havent seen any good short opportunities

i mainly buy puts instead because this allows you to be short on companies with short restrictions. right now some companies i own puts on are..

I opened a short in HIBB today.. around current price


This is a sportings goods company in the Southern US.. they operate in mostly small towns, ie.. the places where people are running out of money

It trades at a premium to Dick's by my measurements, and it shouldn't

I'm shorting it here at $19.28, and I think I can cover this at $17 or even lower in the next few week or a month
