I have added user reputation controls to the profiles. You can vote positive or negative on posts and the users now have symbols (I'll try to find better ones, but these will do for now) that indicate their relative popularity on the forum. This is probably a good idea with a forum like this because it enables new users to somewhat judge the reliability of the posters. I'll update everyone on the way this moves forward, because we will want to tweak it till it reflects things accurately. Let me know what you think.

When you really don't like someone now, you can vote down their reputation and help warn others how they stand in our community.

Here is how the vB reputation 'dots' work:

One green dot is given for every started 100 reputation points.

From 500 points on, one bright green dot is given for every started 200 reputation points.

One red dot is given for every started 100 negative reputation points.

From 500 negative points on, one bright red dot is given for every started 200 negative reputation points

If a user has 0 reputation points, a gray dot is displayed.

If a user has chosen to turn off reputation in his Control Panel (under options) a black dot is displayed.

This should be fun, equivalent to the cliques in high school.

Let me take a wild guess at the initial response; pumpers knock down the 'regular' stock forum regulars and they return the favor. However, anyone that gains a good reputation in spite of this is probably a very laid back seasoned sage that hasn't made any enemies. Well, Grunt and myself are in the running for worse rep.2361

I'm not knocking your latest tweak to the forum Thierry, after the initial obligatory round of entries it should settle down into something that might be useful. Will users be able to see who voted for/against them? Don't forget to be on the lookout for multiple identities by some people.

Tony - it's a very sophisticated system, and I can't reveal all of it here because I don't want anyone gaming it.

The more posts you have, the longer you have been a registered user, the more positive votes for your posts, the more voting power you have. In other words, the more reputation points you have, the more your votes count because you are giving more points to the person you are voting for than would a poster with fewer reputation points of their own.

New users, pumpers, etc. would not be able to alter the results in a significant way.

Of course IP addresses are tracked. You can only vote once for any given post. There is a limit to the amount of votes in one 24 hour period based on your voting power.

Let's try it out for a while and see if the results match what we intuitively know about the relative contributions of the posters here.

It is a democratic system, more or less, and just like real elections, there will be some fooling around and corruption, but I doubt the effort required to cheat would be worth it for anyone but a true madman.

I also have access to an infraction system, but I am worried that we will lose all of our most colorful characters here if people can vote to have them censored. I prefer a system that rates the users based on their usefulness.

You can see who voted on your posts in your control panel.

All negative votes require a comment, and I can review those to see if the negative votes are logical or warranted, if not, I can dismiss them.

Grunt, if you enjoy a good scotch, check out the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. It's representatives go around Scotland and find the best whisky out there, buy the whole hogshead, and bottle it at cask strength in the society's own bottles. Then make it available only to members. The president's selection for best whisky of the year a couple years ago was a 36 yr old MacCallum, a Speyside whisky, which is the best I have ever had. Every month they send out a newsletter/bottling list from which you can choose, and they have a rating and description for each whisky. Here's the link

I got turned on to this a couple years back while enjoying a fine single at the Dell in the Dundee section of Omaha. Don't know why I lost track of it. Maybe because of the several samples over the course of the next 5 hours, ha!!

But it's just like an Ebay rating and a wonderful way to entice those who would seek to speak colorfully and with zooberance to STFU and be a quiet little mouse in sheeps clothing.

In this way, we would be doing our little part to promote peace and harmony in the universe.....Ommmmmm

Kind of a grass roots movement. Then we could expand and go down to the church and have a thanksgiving meal that couldn't be beat and return the favor by taking out a year's worth of garbage and loading it into the Vee Double U microbus and taking it ....................

Just as a matter of curiosity, I wonder if Chubby Kabob distributed any rep points to historical posters in his excursions digging up some really inane threads from the past. Well, no matter, he's gone a good riddance, IMHO.

I have considered going back into the archives and rating past posts. Certainly many past posts of the Chart Guru are worthy of note. But then, TCG is posting now, so I can give him rep based on, "What have you done for me lately?"

Hey Reef,

The way I figure it, you're a good person to have on a camping trip. You do your part and you don't piss people off. I figure I'm up there behind you for much the same reasons. Why Aiki, Cman, Microhedge, Sven, and Englishman aren't ahead of us is no more mysterious than how BSGCORP is rated as high as he is.

I'm reminded of the guy who played in a weekly poker game that was fixed. He lost regularly. His friends asked him why he continued to play. His response was, "I know the game is crooked, but it's the only game in town." That's kinda where we are.

BTW Reef, I think you deserve a good rep on this forum. I think I do too. It's just weird to think that you and I are leading the pack.

Chubby (Luc1Grunt's alias) actually never had enough reputation points of his own to distribute any. You have to have a minimum number of posts and a minimum amount of reputation yourself before your votes actually count. The more reputation you have yourself, the more your votes add reputation to others.

You are limited to 20 votes in a day, and you have to hit 10 people before you hit the same person twice.Well, that may be correct, but it seems like there are other limits.

I figure the best approach is not to worry about the rules. If a post works, try adding to the rep. If a post offends, send a negative message.

Most posts won't rate a response from most people. Seems like that approach ought to even out over time - assuming that folks really are independent.

Story from the past:
In my High School, we had an organization called the "Mock Senate". These folks pretended to be US Senators and debated the political issues of the day.

This was not a popular group. Indeed, the students in this organization tended to be somewhat non-athletic. "Flits" was the politically incorrect term of the time. Still, they enjoyed the Mock Senate and participated with enthusiasm.

One year, the members of the football team decided to join the Mock Senate. When the entire team was present, they comprised a voting majority. They voted the Mock Senate out of existence.

The "flits" were devastated. The school Administration annulled the vote. The football coach "counseled" his team members. The Mock Senate was restored. This was an early lesson for me about the dangers of "majority rule" and of polarized activism.

[For those of you who might be wondering: No, I was not a member of the Mock Senate or the football team. I ran track, played tennis, wrestled, and played Bari Sax in various musical groups.]

Chubby (Luc1Grunt's alias) ...

I really really am skeptical of this...

I've went thru most of his posts and none of them pertain to Luc's style of talking:

Damn. Sorry to have asked. It looked like a decent play. I'm trying to catch up here a bit and maybe fit in but I guess I don't know the rules. I sense a lot of hostility from some folks. Who do I need to screen my posts through? People being called dummies and retards and POSs.

I'm kinda new at this. If you are "using your own insight" for the exit, what insight did you use in buying it? A chart pattern, technical analysis, fundamental approach? Or was it just a pick from a service?

If you are a knowledgeable trader, why would you be using a "robot"?

And where did the realized profit come from?

How will you use tradeking screen shots after the fact of the purchase? Tradestation is easy to blank out data. Very easy. I'm a little confused by all of this.

Are you not concerned with selling a stock with 50,000 share volume?

I'm new at pennies so I need some help understanding these things.

This is another stock that is running with no end in sight. It will hit resistance at 3 and then the sky is the limit. I think it is an easy $4 in the next 3 weeks.

Anyone get in on this today? I bought near the close. I'm down a little bit for now, but this is going above today's high and on to 7.75 very fast. Volume went from 300,000 shares a day to 3.65 million today. It's gonna be a screamer.

I agree, Albert, that the styles are very different. Chubby really ticked me off, while Grunt never did that. [OK, I never took Grunt on head-to-head, but, then, I never had reason to do that.]

I figure the true test is not whether their postings were from the same IP address, but whether their postings overlapped from that IP address. That's something that only Thierry can tell us.

As far as detecting dopplegangers goes, I figure that kthomllc and wallstreetsedge are the same posters. Maybe, now that I've said this, they will diverge. Still, it seemed like a good match to me. So, Thierry, what's the IP address story on those two?

Robert (Khabob) had his fun. I take no responsibility for him. He is a trading "machine" and a good friend. He has taught me a great amount, but his attitude of this site is far worse than "my opinion" may appear at times.

This is a forum right? I guess sensitivity is in the eye of the beholder or the "defender" of attacks?

One red dot is given for every started 100 negative reputation points.

From 500 negative points on, one bright red dot is given for every started 200 negative reputation points

If a user has 0 reputation points, a gray dot is displayed.

If a user has chosen to turn off reputation in his Control Panel (under options) a black dot is displayed.

So, let me get this straight, Green is good, red is bad? Do we ever get a caution flag?

So, let me get this straight, Green is good, red is bad? Do we ever get a caution flag?

No caution flags! But it is twice as hard to get negative points than positive. You would have to be pretty obnoxious to get into the red.

The reputation will mean more over the next few months, because it has to be slow in order to be fair and not be manipulated easily.
