View Full Version : How much do you spend on a stock

How do you know what to spend on a stock? I have been paper trading and I am afraid to enter the game and not be able to exit if I hold too many shares. So what are your determining factors for the amount of money you spend on a stock?
Is 5,000 a safe amount? 10,000? How high can I go without worrying about selling, granted there is high volume?
Thank you in advance,
Doug

Come on guys, 40 looks and not one person can tell me how much they are generally spending, or at least give me their range. I am trying to gain a sense of how much I can spend on a stock and not have to worry about turning around and selling it at my desired price....

Try google:
stock position sizing
trader money management
investment allocation
portfolio allocation
I think you will get about 37 million hits.
Would be a fine start.
Would you like a stock guaranteed to make 100% in the next 6 weeks?

It isn't as easy to answer as you might think, there are variables like, float, daily volume, price, etc, that make it a different answer for each position. I don't play pennies for a bunch of reasons, one of which is that it is difficult to know where to draw that line. I know I can put 10K into a position into a stock with a daily float of 100 million without moving the price, but if I put it into one of Gzappers plays like PLKC.OB, it'll move the price against me and I won't be able to exit the position when I want, or at the price I want.
Lastly, it depends on what ones available cash is, I don't like to trade positions over 5% of my available funds, some folks play 2% some 50% so that is a determining factor as well.

Thank you in advance,
DougMy first reaction was, "How much ya got, sport?"
Then I thought, "Naw, don't be a wiseass," and I didn't post.

Your second post showed you were familiar enough with forums to look at the "views" of a post. Presumedly you know enough about forum etiquette to know you really are getting into personal information here.
So my answer is, "I'm sorry, I don't do that on the first date."
Go back to Luc1Grunt's post and follow instructions. Doing that will get you your answer...that was your objective, wasn't it?

well im still kinda a rookie. but i bought up 1,000,000 shares lol. and well i got knocked in the dirt. because i couldnt sell it. heres what i would do now that i have some experience behind it. i would see how much trading volume is going on. then say ok well im ( 1/10 ) of that, so you will be able to sell it. as long as its 10 times the amount you are buying.
PS: anyone that dosnt want you to know there personal, is probably broke so they are embarressed. lol

You're gonna get some heat on that statement, and let me be the first to say that your post is among the stupidest I have seen in quite some time. You've missed the point on just about every level, indicating an absolute lack of understanding of the basic concepts. I am not going to reply to the points you've attempted to make but I do urge the original poster to disregard your post, and try to understand what Netwrangler is saying.
I urge you to take a step back and think.

Yes I do mind.
I'm a small fish on this forum, you want to learn? Keep your trap shut and read, for about a year, then you will at least be able to converse in a coherent manner.

Bsgcorp, I haven’t been here long enough to bash on you, but you’re an IDOIT!
Stop posting start reading. There are some great minds on here. I am a rookie trader started trading in February lost 50% of my capital found this board in October and have spent hours reading. I am now only down only $500 not because of stock tips, (Tony gave me some good advice on tips my first post “Tips are for Waiters”) but because of the insight and understanding of the market and chart analysis.
I’d be + $1k but I bought in to ETIM  (Thanks stockviper) nevertheless there will be a big upside to that in 2010.:D
BTW, thanks for the insight all!

hmmm. well ok i will try reading more. And if i make future posts about my ideas or picks i will include more of a detailed report so that everyone understands why i think that a certain stock will be the pick of the century.
isnt experience the best teacher though? I know i aint playin with alot of money but i'm working on it. and when i get to the point i got 30G's in the market, man that will be sweet!
