As many of you know [if you read my 'hello' post] I play bass in a bluegrass band.
In the '50's, I played tenor and bari sax in a big-band and tenor in some jazz combos.
My wife and I lived in San Francisco from 1968-1973 within walking [or bicycling] distance of Speedway Meadows. At the time, that was the location of free concerts that drew crowds of up to 25,000 on a Saturday or Sunday to listen to Janis, Dead, Airplane, and various other local groups. [That scene was broken up by the death at Altamont.]
It is with this musical background I ask, "What are you listening to when you trade and when you do research?" [You do do research, don't you? Of course you do.] ;)
My answer:
Research: iTunes radio classical 'all baroque'. I think polyphonic music helps me to relate to different sources of information. [No, I'm not kidding.]
Trading: Well, pretty much, I listen to the 'music' of CNBC — but only until about Power Lunch. After that it's either research time or kick-back time.
Kick-back time: I like to listen to new stuff. At the moment I am listening to Joe Satriani — a guitar player that reminds me of both Hendrix and Santana.
So...what do you listen to? and when?

You're listening to typical Top 40 crap with the CNBC selection, try Bloomberg for a sound with substance and meaning.
As for actual music, never really listened to any while trading. I think I'd find anything with vocals distracting, but I could see classical music as perhaps being helpful in maintaining calm and discipline.
Forgot about the last question; completely depends on the mood and setting, I can listen to anything except Country, including Bluegrass...sorry. I'm pretty fond of Blues and Jazz, but lately I've been listening to '80s stuff. Satriani is enjoyable.

My prior visits to Bloomberg resulted in yawns, but I'm willing to learn. Let the record show that I apply a major[and internalized] BlueSky filter on everything I hear from CNBC. I suppose I will need to adjust this filter for Bloomberg.
As for your aversion to Bluegrass – Son, you gotta hear us! :D
[Actually, that should be possible soon. I'm working on posting a 'demo' mp3 file of our band. If you don't like us then, well, that's life.]

CNBC from 5 a.m. to 4 pm, if I just can't stand it anymore I'll listen to nearly anything but country. I might mix Carmen or Aida (opera) with Zappa's One Size Fits All. I also like the chants of Tibetan Monks for research as it is head clearing, Om Mani Padme Hum (The mantra of the Dalai Lama) is a particular favorite and I have versions that are 60 minutes long.
By the way this is my current desktop picture, as a kid in my circle of friends, you had to like Tuna and Tull or it was get lost.

As a young guy...I gotta ask who's Tuna? (flame shields up) I know Tull.
I mainly listen to jazz or acoustic guitar while researching, unfortunately I have a day job so no trading music for me. Maybe if I ever trade futures I could develop some trading music.
Back in high school I played with a local orchestra so I love the classics, especially the lesser known composers.

Sure but we we're tough in those days, a little paralyzing toxin on a friday night just barely took the edge off. We weren't getting our "entertainment additives" from some slimeball in a Korn tee shirt at at some warehouse rave, we we're getting it from some grad student dweeb in a Kill Ugly Radio tee shirt in the chemistry department at Cal Tech.

"Lay your hands on me / Bon Jovi" intro 3 minutes before the bell.
"Gin and juice/Gourdes" around noon.
"Where are you going/Dave" around the close.
Bloomberg throughout.

well, to be 100% honest, I'm really supposed to be "working". I can't help it if my browser keeps the market on for the entire 8.5 hours I am there. 8)
