You have something you think is worth X (ask) , I think it is worth X-1 (bid), you sell it to me at X-1 (price), Johnny wants it now, he says he'll pay [X-1]+2 (bid), I think its a fair price (ask), we trade at [X-1]+2 (price)

It gets a bit more complicated than that but you really should hit the books if the level of your understanding is as indicated by your question.
