View Full Version : any good $10 and under investments.
well, i got like 10k in my scottrade. i watch mad money and all, but some of the stocks suggested are in the $30-$70 range. at this point, i don't want to go for those because i cannot purchase enough volume yet that i see profitable.
since i am a newbie i have bought only ~$5 stocks like kkd  mmmmm! i bought this one at 4.75 sold it at 5.50 but damn, it is up to 6.11 today.
another i currently have is bbi. i went in there the other day and noticed there were more people around that previously, must be a holiday thing, i bought this at 3.40 and it is up to 4.25, i wonder if it will hit $5 by the end of the year. hmmmm?
any other sub $10 stocks worth buying. i like these cuz i can get like 1000 of em at least. i guess a couple cents x 1000 shares is a decent return. i just don't know how much tax i get taken out at tax time because i don't hold these very long, i wonder if it is really profitable.
thanks.

Just remember, if you can make a lot of money on that amount of shares, you can also lose it just as fast. I would buy that many in increments, since you can't be certain you've hit the lowest price, when entering. That's in Cramer's rules for investing. I have also made quite a bit with small amounts of shares on big stocks, like HAL. You have plenty of money to buy stocks that are more than $10, and can also make plenty on them, if you don't get carried away with greed or the idea that you need thousands to do well.
Check the other thread in this area, there are stock picks on there. This one is more for general discussion. :o
thanks man. yeah, i am still trying to get used to this forum and find out what topics belong where.
but yeah, i guess i am just intimidated spending like $40+ for a stock. maybe i have to build some courage up first.

8O , sorry peoples, this is the first non-car/non-computer forum i participate in. and everyone there is mostly a guy, so i forget that women actually surf the net too. oh, there are a couple of women there, but their screen names usually include the word "diva" in them.

Thanks JimJeep! I have a generic screen name, no problem. :o
Follow your instincts. You can do some research looking for stocks, yourself, and learn a lot in the process. Check out these websites for news, movers, etc. Some of them have free trial subscriptions, special sections for small cap stocks, or are free to browse or sign up with.
marketwatch.com
forbes.com (has a special section for "best small companies")
smallcapcenter.com (just found that, news on small caps)
americanbulls.com (technical trading via candlestick method, interesting)
ibd.com (Investor's Business Daily)
thestreet.com (Cramer is a partner, special subscription section for stocks under $10.)
yahoo.com (financial section)
the research from your brokerage, Scottrade (which is supposed to be really good)
Other people might have some favorites to add.

I added both smallcapcenter and american bulls to my favorites, thanks. But for the ibd.com; I'm pretty sure you meant investors.com for that one.

Oh, thanks! I haven't been on that website for a while and just refer to it as IBD, in discussions. Sorry about the mistake. Oops!!

Meth,
Seriously consider DIW's advice concerning stocks above $10 as well. There's plenty of stocks that will make you money even if you can't buy 500-1000 shares of them.
I would add businessweek.com to your list of favorites as well.

Hey Deep. :D Glad to see familiar names still on this forum. I've been in and out and pooped out w/ all the things going on w/ the holidays and trying to balance out my professional and personal life. Good to take a break once in a while and post some info on this site. I see a lot of new people...this forum has grown.
I also wanted to let you know that I am trying out a new stock screener idea using ROE and relative price strength. Once I get it together are you interested in seeing the stocks that pop up? My initial screen pulled up EOG Resources w/ 24% Return on Equity. ROE is the profit generating efficiency of a company. I'll be watching companies with good ROE (greater than 15%) as well as low debt and seeing how they do. I picked up Gilead Sciences because their ROE was 30% when they pulled back to the mid $40's. Made a tidy $7 unrealized gain. Could have been $10 if I sold at $55 but I see the company going to the mid 60's.
I thoroughly enjoy the challenge....learning is fun....especially when you're making money.

Optimus,
Thank you for the suggestions. I put BEAS on my watch list for my next buy.
I don't know if your offer to share your suggestions was specifically for Deep, but if not, I would be very interested in hearing your insight. If it was, please excuse my intrusion.
Thank you,

I was just thanking Optimus for throwing some stock suggestions out for us to consider. Normally, I don't ask those kinds of questions on here, I ask about how the stock market and trading works, because there is such a learning curve involved. I'm pretty good at shopping for companies, but then, I am pretty good at shopping for anything. It's one of my fortes.

Thank you, deep. I am hoping that that being a woman, the inherent shopping gene will prevail when it comes to picking stocks and I will catch on quickly!

Not just for deep, but for anyone who wants it.
There are a lot of people on this forum looking for a home run hit. I'm just looking at buying the best companies at low prices. Similar to shopping  and having fun at the same time.
For your benefit and mine...trying to figure out how to best handicap this market. I'm a long term fundamental (analysis) investor.
