First time poster and long time lurker with a couple of questions.
I have been trying something that seems to be working , and I need your opinions to see if I have just been lucky.
I bought small positions in F and Chk around the first of the year, and here is what I do-When they go up 6 or 7% I sell my original position and keep my profit in stock. Then when they go back down 6 or 7% I buy more and do the same-
I have been able to accumulate 90 chk, and 350 F doing this.
Here are my questions- Have I just been lucky? What is the downside to this? Are there any places where you can find stocks listed with moves like this? Thank you in advance for any replies.

You could go this route for short-term gains. Do realize that you are taxed at a higher rate if you sell a security that you just bought if it's been less than a year. Therefore, your earnings aren't as substantial as you think, but nonetheless, you are earning - even if it's a small amount.

I personally have CHK, however for the long-term (few years). I'm waiting for natural gas to have a more stronger position the energy market (not necessarily take over oil/coal).

What do you do if it does not go up 6 or 7 percent from your entry, but instead, goes down 6 or 7 percent, then another 6 or 7 percent, then another 6 or 7 percent?

Do a little backtesting from about this time a year ago, until the end of 2008, how does your system work during that period?

Thanks for the replies. If my stocks go down then I just try to ride it out, but I never buy more trying to catch up- The Chk I was trying did that-It went down another 6% after I bought it back, and I just waited and it finally got back to my buy level and now I am waiting to sell 75 of the 80 shares I bought-
