We live in the country and killing fire ants comes with the territory. Put one to two cups of orange citrus concentrate in a five-gallon pail and fill the remainder of the pail with water, then pour it on the ant bed. Not only is it environmentally safe, non-poisonous and cheap, it's 100% effective. Actually, it's good for the soil. You can dilute the concentrate 20:1 for ordinary house hold cleaning in warm water and 10:1 for anything more stubborn, especially grease and oil stains. Don't get the already diluted stuff at Home Despot but instead go to a janitorial supply and get the concentrate.

Nasty little buggers aren't they. When I was in tasmania last year I got tagged by one of their big brothers, called a Jack Jumper, Like a fire ant but an inch long and ferocious. In addition to a big bite they have a stinger twice the size of a bee. I am going back in a couple weeks but luckily it's winter so they are unlikely to be around. 1383

It's not fun getting stung by those, pretty painful experience actually.
