I think all the top models by canon or nikon are great - you have to find the one that you like the best, but they are very close in features and quality.

I have a Nikon D80 which is terrific, I think it's a little under $1k with the 18-135mm lens. My wife has the Fuji S3 pro UVIR which is completely over the top.
