50(MA) + 200(MA) Golden Cross
You buy when the 50 day simple moving average crosses above the 200 day simple moving average.
You've heard of this method before, but let's refine it a little..that way you can get into the best stock possible.
We're going to use stockfetcher to find stocks for strong bullish mid term hold.
The 50 day simple moving average crosses above the 200 day moving average. Generally when this happens, it's a bullish trend that's going to continue upward.
Use http://www.stockfetcher.com/ with the scan below to find these stocks. Copy the words between the lines and paste it into stockfetcher. (If you're new there, scroll down and click on any of the predefined scans and enter the code it gives you. And then copy and paste the words below:
50+200 GoldenCross SCAN
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Show stocks where MA(50) crossed above MA(200) within the last 2 days
and Average Volume is above 300000
and close is between 15 and 30
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It came up with 9 stocks. You'll probably see 5 if you haven't subscribed...
Now go to StockCharts.com and type in the stocks and enter 50, 200, and 15 for the simple moving averages. The 15sma is important, you'll find out later..
Next: Eliminate the ones with negative p/e's and eps's and try to find the ones that don't have much volatility.
Of these of I found FDG, PNX, and PTEN to be the best. You see how they're trending upward slowly, and more importantly, the 50sma crossed above the 200sma just recently for all them. Now we have three to pick from. Now everyone has their own preference on how to choose from here. But how about using StockScouter in order to do this for us? We try to find the one with the highest score.
StockScouter
http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/StockRating/srsmain.asp
FDG = 10
PNX = 8
PTEN= 5
FDG is the winner with a stockscouter rating of 10, the highest score a stock can possibly get.
Okay, now for the 15sma. In my opinion, a sell signal is given when the stock crosses below 15sma. Some would prefer 20sma...
Also, make sure to check for earnings anytime soon..

Excellent tutorial! Lots of great money-making information, and all in one post!
Here are the three charts of the great examples.

How do you post stockcharts on the board? When I asked stockcharts, they said their charts only work on yahoo and investhub forums, not vb forums.
Great post stargazer.
I have many ways to look for stocks, including screens on M* and elsewhere. I look at the M* 5* stocks and those that are trading way below fair value, according to their calculations.
I input them into stockcharts and a M* watch portfolio for analysis. I look at them from several points of view to find those on the move.
I've watch portfolios based on Berkshire and its 7 5* stocks, as identified by M*. I create and update the Big Cap 20 portfolio from Tuesday's IBD and look for buy signals, although those stocks often have moved past the pivots.
Today I created at weekly stocks on the move watch portfolio in stockcharts.com and found some buys. I also look at the charts for stocks written up in IBD and Barron's every week.
I'm looking for longer term plays, including opportunities to buy put and call leaps. This is particularly true with the M* 5* stocks. I'm willing to sit with the leaps and collars, the former offering some risk and the latter offering relatively little risk but requiring big capital outlays.
Anyway, good post, and a lot less work than I've put in today.

Very nice post!
You learn something every day!!
SMA is a great indicator.
Bollinger Bands have also worked good for me.
PTEN is my choice. I actually did a day trade on their last earnings...up $1 a share and popped it! Not bad for half a day!!

You have to make a local copy or screenshot of the chart, usually by right-clicking and choosing copy image or save image,) make sure it isn't bigger than 620 pixels wide (it won't be unless it is gigantic, if it is you have to resize it) then to insert it into your post you click on the paperclip icon ("show advanced" if you clicked on quick reply) and in manage attachments you have to select file and then upload. Once uploaded, go back to the paperclip drop down menu and select the attachment to have it appear in your post.

I refined the scan a little.
For the stock price use this line instead: and close is above 15
With that setting it found 21 matches...instead of 9
Also, in order to weed out any stock with negative P/E's, add this line: and PE is above 1
Stockfetcher will ignore all stocks with negative p/e's, that way we can concentrate on the good ones. (It found 16 matches.)
So now the scan would look like this below:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Show stocks where MA(50) crossed above MA(200) within the last 2 days
and Average Volume is above 300000
and PE is above 1
and close is above 15
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now all's we have to do is cherry pick. Some prefer their own methods from here...but a StockScouter rating of 8 or above would be great.....10 would be excellent. :)

Wanted to say thank you for teaching us this lesson. I agreed with FDG and bought it at 29.58 ON 5/29/07. It sits today at 33.46 for a nice 13-14% GAIN IN ONLY 30 DAYS!
So, thanks for turning $9700 into $11100.
Best regards!!!

Great post stargazer - I am completely new greatly appreciate the information.
Quick question though, StockFetcher is very cool - but are their any other alternatives that support those types of queries (w/o much hassle) but maybe more feature rich (paid or free)? Like I said I am starting from ground zero and looking to find the best tools of the trade...
Thanks in advance
PS - (btw - first post on this forum!)

fetcher isnt that bad once you play around with it. its extremely powerful and well worth the upgrade for the paid service.
here is a link to a free screener from yahoo. it relies more on fundamentals but maybe its more of what you are looking for.
