They really did get Caremark cheap. This should improve earnings considerably. Plus they announced a huge buyback, 5 billion I believe. And ofc the dividend doesn't hurt!
I got in at 34 and it's been slowly inching it's way up. I see it going well into the 40's over the next few months with these buybacks coming (and beyond if earnings go well).

Not bad...but my play here is WAG. They keep buying up these in-store health clinics. They are also the largest drug store chain.

It may be going up but I work for Walgreens (WAG) and here at least we put them to shame... they are going out of business around here b/c no one will even work for them. There is my insider info. However, in the long run... look for a Walgreens to buy any and everyhting in it's path... it is debt free and makes a ton of money... I can't disclose all the numbers and rankings but we are better than ALOMOST ALL except walmart in sales

I believe CVS owns more stores than WAG does now. WAG may be buying everything in sight but its not like CVS is sitting back and doing nothing. They keep buying other chains and of course the big caremark merger that will generate a ton of cash.
One downside to CVS is that it does have a large amount of debt. They only have half the number of employees that WAG has, so less cost on benefits. WAG creates just slightly more revenue than CVS does so I wouldn't be too happy with them.
Although my wife does work for CVS and we have quite a bit of stock in them. So I am definitely happy with them.

It's strange you say that, because upon a quick inspection there are roughly twice as many CVS stores where you live then Walgreens. (Same here in Raleigh). I highly doubt their stores are going out of business because "no one will work for them".
I don't think Walgreens is a bad company for the record, just saying.

The amount of drug stores (CVS, Walgreens, etc) in my area is insane. It seems like there's one on every corner and another 393,3939,221 being built every day. Though its seems, to me atleast, that the Walgreens seem to stick around longer then their competition.

ok, so not all the stores will be shut down in the next 5 years due to lack of interest of employees. However, many (in my town) have left CVS to come work at Walgreens and feel it better. Not everyone and every town is the same. As for the number of stores they have, yes they are BOTH growing but CVS does it MAINLY by buying out other companies. Walgreens does the same thing too (like in Hawaii) but they are not in debt as CVS is. The P/E is about the same for both companies.
Walgreens though with it's fewer stores is able to produce more money... what more need I say? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Also... after a quick look, there are 3 CVS in Greenville and 4 Walgreens (WAG) in Greenville. According to Google at least. I know there are 4 Walgreens, a further look would be needed as to the CVS #
OK, 411.com also lists them as only 3 stores. It shows 5 but there are 2 that are the same location... maybe CVS is actually miscounting their stores too LOL

Found this link on a Rite-Aid website that talks about their aquiring Brooks/Eckerds stores. Kind of interesting graphic with CVS and Walgreens.

Both sides of the debate are interesting - It will be more interesting to see what each stock does over the next 6-12 months.
In recent history CVS still looks better (Walgreens has been trading in a pretty tight channel for a long time). And CVS shows the upward growth as of late.
I still think CVS will be better going forward - but hey, I hope both of them double in the next year for all our sake :)

That is pretty interesting. 6200 CVS stores to 5500 Walgreens. Not a very big difference over an entire country. And now Rite Aid has a very strong number too with 5000. I have done almost 0 research on Rite Aid so I won't comment on them at this time. But if anybody wants to, go nuts!
