10 points on Dow is not enough. It is peanuts. Actually more like sesames.

10 points on Down = 1 point on S&P roughly. Too small for even a wiggle. If Dow goes up/down 100 points (SP 10 points) then my eyes will open a little bit wider.

haha

I was about to post this message:

"10 Points in DOW is nothing.

Bottom Line: DOW is USELESS! Track S&P."

It's difficult to use futures in that manner. The time the futures are up or down in a meaningful way is before most if not all folks can trade stocks. The futures give an indication of the direction the market will take at open, and help me set up my bias for the day.

I've started trading S&P 500 e-minis. I had three winner trades and one loser trade Thurs/Fri (1 contract at a time). Netted me $50. Getting my feet wet and trying to establish a trading system. What have you found to be most helpful for you in trading futures successfully?

I trade options. It's all about following the trend. The trend is your friend. Don't try buying the dips and picking tops. Over the long-run that's a losing game. If you have not read the book Market Wizards, you should. It interviews some of the top traders in the world, and most of them are trend followers.

I think most of them got busted and went broke already. That's what I read but I could be wrong. But I know for sure some the turtle traders went broke and decided to write books instead.

Hone your skills and refine your system by trading SSO with margin (paper if necessary).

When ready for futs.....InteractiveBrokers TWS demo allows you to use the DOM for futures....data is a day or 2 old, but ticks in real time. This will allow you to practice executions and see your system in real-time. P&L will remain accurate over days as will your trade log, charts, etc.

Understand the margin used in futures as well as execution month.
